a sample of issan music

“Issan people are like the black people of Thailand. Everyone looks down on them, but they are Thailand’s heart and soul” — my black friend M

Issan has a pretty interesting culture. It’s cool in that people aren’t just trying to be really white like in Bangkok, they have their own weird, original shit going on. Issan music in particular is quite cool.

Here is a song by an Pai (bamboo) Pongsatorn, (thanks to Tewson for the name!) called Khun Baan Deocan (which I think means something like “People from your same village”):

Khuun Baan Deocan

The chorus says something like “When you see someone from your same village, you know their heart”

The singer’s name is Pai (bamboo) Pongsatorn. You got the meaning correct. It’s a really nice song indeed. 🙂

Another hit song from Pai is “Yaak Me Ter Pen Fan” (I want you to be my girlfriend).

I really recommend you the song “Man Tong Torn” (Another drink to stop the hang over) from Poyfai Malaipon. It’s really famous right now.

    Hey Tewson,

oh yeah, i’ve heard that “be my girlfriend song”, it’s quite cool!

actually, Pai just played in Nong Khai for Songkran, that’s how I remembered about that song. I went up to one of the bootleg vcd stands and tried to sing the song until one of the guys recognized it and then he sold me a vcd with a ton of videos from Pai Pongsatorn.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will check it out! Feel free to send any more music suggestions or post them here. Different kinds of regional music are becoming more and more popular all over the world (see my posts on baille funk or kweilo) and I really think Issan music could become one of them, it’s really interesting musically, I think.
