i’m ok!

Fire at Central World by Adris Lateef

(Picture above of Central World burning by amazing photographer Adris Lateef)

Well, I made it through the night, sort of like in a vampire movie, and now I feel fresh and drinking coffee. I’m in a surprisingly good mood, given how fucked up everything is, but there’s nothing like feeling you might die and not dying to put everything into perspective. I’m alive. Woo hoo! Nothing else matters.

Things are “peaceful” for now. Some shit is still on fire, I think, but it’s the same stuff that was on fire yesterday.

It was so eerie to see Bangkok so quiet last night after curfew. From my high balcony I could hear frogs singing — so in all this disaster, it has still given me one night of frogs singing in the midst of Bangkok.

Some people are selling food on the street already — the ability to ignore unpleasant things and go on with everyday life of Thai people is both amazingly awesome and probably the cause of all this mess — problems go ignored and fester until they explode into insane violence like yesterday.

Years ago I applied for a fellowship that sends young writers to the Third World. In my application I wrote, “I am interested in collision points where East meets West, poverty meets wealth, old meets new.” (most of that application is now the “About” page of this blog). I guess where we are now is at one of these collision points.

You’re still ok, right? 🙂 (I’m a mother now, I have the right to be paranoid!)

yep, i’m still ok for now, things have quieted down here in Bangkok, although everyone is still on the watch. I’m working on a cool photography project (will post about that in a sec) so that’s been keeping me busy. sorry for not posting any updates!
