tourism in the real world

Tomas Wanhoff, in his recent blog post, Not Every Country is a Disneyland, Some Are Real Countries like Thailand gave words to my growing urge to say something to the stranded tourists, namely the whole world doesn’t revolve around you.

It’s not the bitching and being pissed off that I mind — that’s understandable. I’d bitch too if my vacation was ruined. All of us would. What grates on me is complaints with the attitude of “how dare these people try to decide the political future of their country, when I’M trying to go to the beach!” — the apparent total lack of awareness that there is anything else at stake in the protests than missed flights.

This is a country, you know. It has citizens, that, you know, do stuff, even when you’re not trying to go to the beach.
